Full text: List of Nobel Laureates (1939)

The prize for the year 1930 was awarded to: 
RAMAN, Sir CHANDRASEKHARA VENKATA, professor 
of physics at the University of Calcutta, born 
1888; “for his works on the diffusion of light and 
for the discovery of the effect known by his name.” 
The prize for the year 1931 was allocated in 1932 to 
the special fund for this group of prizes. 
The prize for the year 1932 was awarded in 1933 to: 
HEISENBERG, WERNER, professor of theoretical phy- 
sics at the University of Leipzic, born 1907; 
“for the creation of the quantum mechanics whose 
application has among othey things led to the 
discovery of the allotropic forms of hydvogen.”’ 
The prize for the yeav 1933 was divided equally be- 
tween 
SCHRODINGER, ERWIN, professor of theoretical physics 
at the University of Berlin, born 1887; and 
Dirac, P. A. M., professor of mathematics at the 
University of Oxford, born 1902; “for the dis- 
covery of new fertile forms of the atomic theory.” 
The prize for the year 1934 was allocated in 1935 
with one third to the main fund of the Founda- 
tion and with two thirds to the special jund for 
this group of prizes. 
The prize for the year 1935 was awarded to: 
CHADWICK, JAMES, professor of physics at the Uni- 
versity of Liverpool, born 1891; “for his discovery 
of the neutron.” 
The prize for the year 1936 was equally divided be- 
tween 
Hess, Victor FRANZ, professor of experimental phys- 
ics at the University of Innsbruck and director 
of the Institute for Radiation Research, born 
1883; “for his discovery of cosmic radiation’; and
