The Evolution of a STANLEY
Engine Divided Scale
The selection and seasoning of boxwood used in the manufacture of our scales is the
subject of the strictest attention. The special stabilising proces sthrough which a
“ Stanley ” scale passes before being finally divided and ready for use occupies a period of
at least 2 years. Graduation takes place on special machines of our own design ensuring
extreme accuracy.
Only the finest materials are used and after each operation involved in making the scale,
it is laid aside for further seasoning. The following diagram illustrates these operations,
and in the construction of our celluloid-edged scales there are the additional processes of
Spindling for edging, followed by glueing of the celluloid edges.
This involves a further stabilising period of at least 6 months before the celluloid-edged
scale is finally divided and figured. The care thus taken in manufacture guard “ Stanley ”
Scales against warpage and shrinkage and ensures long and faithful service to its prospective
owner.

IVORY SCALES
These are the best of all scales on account of their thinness and legibility, but we cannot
guarantee that they will always keep perfectly accurate, as even after the long seasoning
we give them there will sometimes be a further slight contraction when exposed to
different atmospheric conditions.
