he Life and Tunes of Goethe, by Herman Grimm, ls
an admirable piece of work, thoroughly honest in in-
tention, vigorously written on an excellent plan, with
an earnestness that is unmistakable, a patience of re-
search that is occasionally wearisome, but never fruit-
ess in results, and with a judgment remarkable for its
manliness and for the freedom with which It is uttered.
• Herr Grimm is thoroughly absorbed in his work: his I
admiration for hjs hero is enthusiastic; the slightest
even the most insignificant, details fttsclnate him!
and his theory now nud then makes him neglectful of
the tendency of his facts. The work is a fine specimen j
ol toe German love for completeness and German sin-'
: cerity in all that it undertakes in art, science and Jitertf !
j ture. A useful chronological table follows the text, and 1
I the index is a model of its kind. The work 1ms been I
I admirably translated by Sarah Holland Adams, ami the '
firm-name of Little, Brown & Co. is a sufficient gnarau-
fpe for its mechanical excellence.
